Statement from Rep. McDermed on Cannabis Legalization

Springfield, IL…. State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) issued the following statement after the Illinois House of Representatives voted to legalize cannabis:

“Over the past few months I have debated both internally and with advocates on both sides as I considered how to vote. We are creating an entirely new industry and legalizing a drug that has not been thoroughly studied without enough safeguards in place. Most concerning, studies have shown that in states that have legalized weed, use amongst teens and traffic incidents have risen. The revenue that advocates are anticipating will be offset by the increased burdens on our police and first responders as a result of increased accidents, enforcement, and other negative externalities that will be experienced by our communities.  At the end of the day, what is most important is how my district feels about this issue. I surveyed my district and the results were strongly opposed to this measure. My primary role as their State Representative is to be their voice in Springfield and that is why I voted no. ”
